GERMAN POSTMARK FORGERIES

In addition to the recent Blum forgeries several other counterfeits of postmarker handstamps have been documented in Germany. In 1961 Willy Wolff compiled the booklet 600 Falsche Stempel (publ. Arge Neues Handbuch der Briefmarkenkunde, nd.), which illustrated impressions of the efforts of some 15 forgers. Not all 600 are date stamps, many are overprints.

On 8 March 1974 the Stade police seized a large number of forged date stamps at Dieter Krüger of Sittensen, near Hamburg. The cancellers are most likely zincos, a method used by e.g. all newspapers up to at least the 1960s. The faked stamps had been sold to collectors by a dozen dealers at an estimated total of 3 million DM.

In September 1974 the Berlin police confiscated some 200 date stamps, including a few overprints and expert marks, that had been in use since about 1969. Court case: Az 54 Js 1248/74. Some of these postmarks are identical with the Sittensen fakes. In the last two forgery cases copies of sheets with impressions of the devices were widely circulated among philatelists after the arrests.

The below reference list has been compiled by G. Kock. It is based on all the images of the postmarks. The ones in italics are from 600 Falsche Stempel. The list is first sorted by the stamp issuing country on which stamps the cancellation may be found.
* denotes commemorative postmarks (Sonderstempel). "nd" means no date slugs, but some of these forgers also made many separate lines with only date and time that could be inserted in the devices. Certain dates may thus be to "semi-variable". There have, of course, been more forgeries since these.
